[IMPORTANT] Fall 2024 Program Change Request Information

The following email was sent to your child at their stuy.edu<http://stuy.edu> email address. This is a courtesy copy for you. August 27, 2024 Dear Students, Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! The first day of classes begins on September 5, 2024, and we have created preliminary student programs (schedules) so you are on track to fulfill graduation and Stuyvesant endorsement requirements. Our goal starting on the first day is for each student to establish the important teacher-student and student-student relationships needed in each class so you build momentum each day for a successful year. You may have seen a preliminary program on the MySchools, TeachHub, or parent NYC Schools account; however, please note that student schedules are not finalized, and information on period times is inaccurately posted. Finalized student schedules for all students (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors) will be available on Talos<https://talos.stuy.edu/auth/login/?next=/users/students> on Thursday, August 29, 2024. Students in grades 10, 11, and 12 will have the opportunity to request ONE program change submission through Talos<https://talos.stuy.edu/auth/login/?next=/users/students>following the schedule below. Incoming grade 9 (freshmen) students will have an opportunity to fix any program issues with their counselor on the first days of school (9/5/24 and 9/6/24). The program change request process will start on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at 5:00pm, and requests for grades 10, 11 and 12 will only be accepted through Talos<https://talos.stuy.edu/auth/login/?next=/users/students>, the portal to submit a program change request. Please keep in mind a program change request submission does not guarantee the request will result in a changed program schedule. Please note, if a program change request is granted, then you will not be able to drop the course later in the term, so please be mindful of your requests. The request submission is a request only and dependent on many factors including graduation and Stuy endorsement requirements, AP limits and prerequisites, seat availability, and mandated instructional periods and courses/labs. Be sure to review this entire message (and the FAQ<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1q7mZF6cWuubeCeidPopqA2uHFw-8AgdKhoFYwLvY...>) as we provide more information for what qualifies as one program change request submission along with how and when to submit a program change request. Please note, program change requests on the basis of the following reasons below will be DENIED: * Teacher preference * Period preference. Examples include, but are not limited to: * Travel distance from home * Requests to arrive late/leave early * Changes to lunch period * Undocumented health issues * Classroom location * Requests to reverse previously requested program change The program change request through Talos will be open starting with our upperclassmen and following the timeframe below: Start Date and Time Class/Grade Start Date and Time Seniors Thursday, August 29, 2024, starting at 5:00 pm EST Juniors Friday, August 30, 2024, starting at 9:00 am EST Sophomores Friday, August 30, 2024, starting at 12:00 pm EST Freshmen Thursday, September 5 and Friday, September 6, 2024 (see your counselor for errors only during lunch/free periods) End Date and Time Class/Grade End Date and Time Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 12:00 pm EST Freshmen (See your School Counselor for errors only on September 5 and 6, 2024, during your free period or lunch) ***IMPORTANT: The deadline for all students to submit a program change request through Talos is Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 12:00 pm EST. Important Directions and Guidelines (Please Read Thoroughly): * A program change request submission must be accompanied with a justification for the request. A request without justification will be denied. Your justification allows for School Counselors and/or Department Chairs/Assistant Principals to easily identify the purpose of your request, which will inform their decision in either approving or denying the request, or perhaps devising an alternative. The highest priority for a program change request will be given to meeting NYSED graduation requirements and the Stuyvesant endorsement. Finally, if a program change request is granted, then you will not be able to drop the course later in the term, so please be mindful of your requests. * YOU WILL BE LIMITED TO ONLY ONE PROGRAM CHANGE REQUEST. In your one program change request submission, you may need to drop multiple classes and/or add multiple classes. Please be aware that the more actions you are requesting on your ONE request, the less likely it will get approved or even processed because of multiple waitlists and potential conflicts (please see FAQs). * Counselors and Department Chairs/Assistant Principals have the option in Talos to leave messages for you upon approving or denying a request. * Since program change requests are to be exclusively handled through Talos, and messages are being posted and reviewed through Talos; extraneous emails will slow down the process of program changes--do not email the Department Chairs, school counselors, or Program Office with program change requests. Therefore, upon submitting a request, please wait patiently until the request has been handled. **Please note that teachers and counselors do not officially return until Tuesday, September 3, 2024 * Please refer to this grid to find elective courses<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1M6XbXAzdGp7NzlovUkZ6GdycFrBTRd9mQNE5...> and their period. Please keep in mind that some of the courses might not be available because they are full or have prerequisites. Requesting a course with no available seats or one that you are not qualified to take will reduce the chances of your one request being approved. Follow the directions below to submit a program change request: 1. Click on the “Program Management Portal” 2. Click “Create Change” located on the right 3. Click the corresponding “Drop” button to drop a course 4. Find the requested course in the search area in the lower left and then click, “Add Course” to your schedule. Talos will prevent you from submitting an impossible schedule through red warning dialogues after clicking “Add Course” Upon generating the request, Talos will notify the appropriate Guidance Counselor and Department Chair/Assistant Principal for review and approval/denial. Please refer to the FAQ<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1q7mZF6cWuubeCeidPopqA2uHFw-8AgdKhoFYwLvY...> to understand the overall program change request process. Please do not reply directly to this email.
