Volunteers NEEDED for Fall Open House on 10/16 & 10/17

Good morning parents & guardians, We will host our Fall Open House for interested families of 7th and 8th graders on October 16 and 17 next week. We are in need of your help! We need volunteers to make our Open House a success. Parents (even our recent alumni parents) play a vital role in welcoming interested students and families to Stuyvesant and sharing their experiences and knowledge. We do not have enough volunteers to support Open House yet… time is running out! PLEASE sign up to assist us with any assignment such as welcoming families, supervising floors, selling Spiritwear or supervising student fundraisers. We are expected a very large crowd on the second day of Open House on October 17, which is the greatest need for volunteers if you can assist. AMC Exam Registration opens TODAY 10/9 3:35pm

Good morning, As mentioned in the Weekly Update on Monday, registration for the AMC Exam opens this afternoon, October 9 at 3:35pm. Math Team students do NOT need to register and are already registered. Open registration is available on a first come first served basis and space is limited. Please see below and direct any questions to Mr. Sterr at bsterr(a)schools.nyc.gov American Mathematics Competition (AMC) Registration The Stuyvesant Math Team, in conjunction with the Mathematics Department, will be administering the AMC exams (American Mathematics Competition). Both exams will be held during school during Periods 1 and 2. AMC A Exam The AMC 10A/12A exams will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 from 8:00am to 9:25am. AMC B Exam The AMC 10B/12B exams will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 from 8:00am to 9:25am. Students may take one exam or both. Taking both exams gives students two chances to qualify for the next round of exams, the American Invitational Math Exam (AIME). Eligibility Students in grades 9 and 10 can register for the AMC 10 exam. They must have been born after 5/6/2007. Students in grades 11 or 12 can register for the AMC 12 exam. They must have been born after 5/6/2005. Math Team Student All students in Math Team are required to take both AMC exams and are automatically registered for them. Their fees for the exams will be paid for by the Math Team. Other Students All other students interested in taking either AMC exam may register online through the attached link. Stuyvesant Parents’ Association Fall Elections will be held online at the PA General Meeting on September 17th, 2024 at 7:00 pm. Positions to be filled: This election will select the Corresponding Secretary, Members-at-Large for all classes (2 Senior parents, 2 Junior, 3 Sophomore, and 4 Freshman) and the School Leadership Team Freshman parent delegate and alternate. All parents of current students are encouraged to run for office! MCCOURT - JUST A TEACHER" https://www.stuyalumni.org/events/2024-annual-general-meeting-agm/ Alumni from all class years and their guests, students and their parents, and admirers & fans of Frank McCourt are warmly invited to attend the Alumni Association’s 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 6/26 from 6:30-8:30PM. At 7:30PM, we will be treated to a special reading on the stage of "MEET MR. MCCOURT - JUST A TEACHER", consisting of excerpts from the Broadway-bound play “McCourt“. For this performance, the actors are all Stuy alumni including some who will have just graduated in 2024! Frank McCourt is played by Todd Woodard ('91), and Hailey, his former student and protégé is played by Michelle Simon Miller ('07). August Petry (’24), Matthew Monge ('24), and Unique Zhang ('24) play multiple roles, including Stuy students, their parents, and even a hitchhiker. Mr. McCourt was Stuy’s beloved English and Creative Writing teacher from 1972-1987. After his retirement, he wrote his memoir “Angela’s Ashes” in 1996 when he was 66 years old. “Angela’s Ashes” won the Pulitzer Prize, was on The New York Times bestseller list for 117 weeks, translated in over 30 languages, and made into a movie in 1999. The memoir was encouraged by his Stuy students who urged him to tell his story, just as he had inspired them to tell their own stories during his eighteen year tenure as their high school teacher. Mr. McCourt also published “Tis” (1999) and “Teacher Man” (2005), also NY Times bestsellers. These sequel memoirs to “Angela’s Ashes” tell the story of his New York City immigrant and teaching experiences. They are being adapted for the stage by Ilya Khodosh ('04) with excerpts by former student of Mr. McCourt and NY Times bestselling author Susan Jane Gilman ('82) for the play "McCourt". This new work is produced by Hal Diamond ('78) and directed by award winning director Susan Tenney.
