Update for Tuesday, May 17 from Principal Yu

Dear Stuyvesant Community, I want to provide a brief update regarding our return to school tomorrow, especially in light of the flurry of information that circulated over the weekend. While we have reported the vandalism, graffiti, and anti-Semitic and racist content found in the boys’ bathrooms to the appropriate authorities, we will continue our own investigation to identify those responsible. Equally important to holding those accountable are the steps we will take to bring our community together. We are exploring learning opportunities for restorative and educational interventions for students, staff, and families. Learning to coexist civilly, respectfully, and inclusively cannot be taken for granted - it is everyone's responsibility. We will work with the district for additional guidance and next steps. Over the past two days, our school has received heightened negative attention online, which has understandably caused anxiety and concern around safety. Out of an abundance of caution, we have been in close communication with the NYPD, and they have assured us of increased support. We will also have additional district staff, more school safety agents, and a visible NYPD presence around the school—including near the bridge and Chambers Street subway station throughout the day. Our administrative team, deans, and support staff will also be actively present throughout the building and surrounding areas to address any concerns should they occur. In addition, all boys’ bathrooms on every floor will be open and available throughout the day. I believe in our students to uphold the expectations we set for one another, and I do not anticipate a repeat of last week's events. Moreover, I expect our young people to report any issues immediately to our school staff if they arise. Finally, let us return tomorrow with a visible sense of responsibility and courage—to ourselves, to one another, and to the values of dignity, inclusion, and mutual respect. Especially today, as we reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day, may we be reminded of the importance of community and shared purpose. Sincerely, Dr. Seung C.
